Toddler Eczema Advice For Parents
Eczema can be a very irritating condition, especially in babies. In the United States, it can affect as many as 10 to 20 percent of infants but usually clears up by the time the baby reaches 1½ to 2 years old. However, some babies can suffer quite badly from eczema, and this can then continue into their adult life. Fortunately today, there are many ways to beat eczema and rid your child of the irritation associated with it.
Eczema is one of the more common toddler allergies and is essentially an inflammation of the skin, which can range from a mild itch to really uncomfortable bubbles on the surface of the skin. No matter how severe it is, itchy skin is something that everyone would like to avoid.
In infants, the most common type of eczema is atopic eczema, which you can commonly identify by red, scaly skin on the scalp, face, arms or legs. Atopic eczema can be hereditary, and usually starts if your toddler has dry skin. It can also be triggered by an allergic reaction to clothing, something in the washing powder you use, and even certain foods. I suffered from eczema too, and warm weather was usually the cause of it.
Lets take a closer look at couple of the signs of toddler eczema, and what you can do to easy the irritation.
Baby Eczema Rash On The Skin
Toddlers who suffer from eczema are usually identified by red rashes. These tend to be on their faces and neck, but may also be seen on the wrists, neck, arms, and ankles.
Dry Skin
czema produces dry skin, and since babies tend to get irritated quickly, they will scratch those areas. This damages the skin, makes the irritation worse, so the baby scratches some more. This makes the eczema worse, leaving that area becoming prone to infections, and may even create some pus. If this happens to your child, you should seek the advice of your doctor.
So how do you go about preventing eczema in your baby? Firstly, don’t think you have neglected your child – as I have previously stated, baby eczema is commonly triggered by an alergic reaction to do something, and you need to try to find out what that is. Here are the more common baby eczema treatments that you might like to try;
Bathing And General Skin Care
Always try to use baby friendly products – bath your child in lukewarm water (not too warm as the heat can trigger eczema), use proper skin lubrication with essential oils, such as jojoba or almond oil and also use hypoallergenic creams. Use an unscented soap, as it has been proven that Eczema does not like perfumed products. Don’t rub your child dry – pat him or her very slowly with a soft cloth. Leave the skin slightly damp and then apply the popular baby eczema treatment of moisturizing
Food
Food can be another cause of toddler eczema, and the cause can be hard to track down. Firstly ask yourself – have you recently changes your baby’s diet? If so, what new food are they eating? Quite often that food, or a component of it, can be the cause of the eczema. In fact, it is thought that up to 30% of all childhood eczema is caused by a food allergy. You just need to go through a trial and error process of eliminating the new foods until you find the one that stops the itching. Them most common causes are milk, eggs, wheat, fish and peanuts. Also try to avoid acidic foods.
Food rich in Vitamin C is also a good prevention of child eczema because it reduces the amount of histamines in the body. Vitamin c rich foods include grapefruit, blackcurrant, red pepper, broccoli, red currant, peach, melon, apple, cucumber, etc.
Clothing
This is often overlooked, but many man-made fibers can be the cause of eczema in babies. It has been suggested that all bedding is 100% cotton, and frequently cleaned to keep it free of bacteria. As with the bathing suggestions, make sure the cleaning substance used is mild and scent free. You should apply the same criteria to clothing – no wool or similar fabrics which might irritate baby’s skin should be present
If after trying all of that, don’t panic if you can’t find the cause yourself – there are reckoned to be approximately 65,000 different substances that might cause contact eczema in your baby, so you won’t find them all!
If the case of toddler eczema in your child is very severe, and you’ve eliminated as many natural causes as possible, then a trip to our doctor is advisable. He may prescribe antihistamines to relieve itching, or even hydrocortisone creams for a limited period, which are steroid based and the best cream for baby with eczema because they dramatically reduce the irritation.
Eczema is a very irritating condition, no matter what the age when it occurs. Eczema in toddlers is particularly unpleasant for both the child and the parents, but hopefully you can see that it is mostly a temporary condition which can be easily treated.
