Is Your Baby Allergic to Your Breastmilk?

We’re being constantly told how breastfeeding is best for baby, and it’s true. However, some babies can be allergic to their own mother’s milk.

Is Your Baby Allergic to Your Breastmilk?

An increasing number of children suffer from severe food allergy. Children don’t just develop food allergy when they begin to eat solid food: some develop food allergy right from the start, when they’re being breastfeed.

If a mother is allergic to any food the chances are her child may also be allergic to those foods. Many mothers don’t realise that they are allergic as they display little or no symptoms. However, the allergic reaction can be much more pronounced in their suckling child. What mother eats; baby eats.

There are eight types of food that account for all but 10 percent of food-allergy; these are eggs, wheat, dairy, soy and peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.

One in every 17 children under the age of 3 — that’s 5.8 percent — has a food allergy, according to The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about food allergies. But identifying that your baby is suffering from food-allergy can be difficult as the symptoms displayed are attributable to other factors.

infant skin rash linked to breast milk

A number of children eventually outgrow food allergies. Peanut allergies, however, tend to be lifelong. If you know that you suffered from food allergy as a child you should avoid those foods whilst you are breastfeeding. Even if you have never suffered from any food-allergy you can cut down the risks of your baby developing a food-allergy by avoiding the eight main allergy causing foods. Also, when you wean your child you should avoid feeding your child these foods until they are at least one year of age. Introduce these foods one-by-one and observe your child’s reaction after feeding.

If you suspect that your child is suffering from food-allergy you should consult with your pediatrician. Unfortunately many pediatricians are reluctant to conclude that a child is allergic to food. Your may have to fight your corner. Also many are hesitant to tell a mother to drop things from her diet, because they’re concerned about her nutrition. Stand your ground and if your pediatrician refuses to listen to your concerns, you can ask to be referred to an allergist.

The following are common symptoms of food allergy or intolerance:
Chronic eczema: Long periods of scaly and itchy skin rashes.
Hives: Often-itchy red welts on the surface of the skin.
Chronic unexplained digestive or respiratory problems.
Colic: chronic, unexplained, excessive crying.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal. Call the emergency services immediately if you see signs of anaphylaxis. Symptoms include: Severe hives or hives in conjunction with another reaction, facial swelling, swelling of mouth and throat (the constriction of the throat is especially dangerous because as the throat swells shut, the child will stop breathing — child turns blue with lack of oxygen), vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, drop in blood pressure, fainting, death.

Eczema in babies is sometimes triggered by lupus and usually responds well to home remedies. Neotnatal lupus is sometimes passed from mother to the infant during pregnancy and the birth process. Lupus antibodies can be transferred from the mother to the fetus and result in lupus illness in the newborn.

Infant lupus usually causes a rash but fortunately it usually clears up after six to eight months if there are no complications. Lupus is actually an attack of the body upon itself. Lupus can take two forms, sometimes causing eczema and sometime attacking vital organs of the body.

In infants, eczema typically occurs on the forehead, cheeks, forearms, legs, scalp and neck. In older children eczema occurs on the face, neck and the insides of the elbows, knees and ankles. Most infants with eczema show significant improvement by the age of two and about 40% outgrow eczema entirely by the time they are young adults. Controlling eczema early can help keep it from becoming worse.

One of the major concerns when an infant has eczema is the issue of itching. An infant does not have the ability to reason and therefore does not know that scratching will cause the eczema to worsen. This is why there is special cotton clothing that can be used for infants that covers up their hands so they can’t scratch while they sleep and cause the eczema to worsen and spread.

An infant with eczema should only wear soft all cotton clothing with no synthetic fibers. Parents with infants who have eczema should wash the child’s bedding and clothing only in hypoallergenic detergents and the clothing should be sent through the rinse cycle twice. Also, you should keep the child’s room and play areas free of dust mites because they are a common eczema trigger.

baby eczema home treatment

Some parents don’t realize that baby eczema is often triggered by food allergies. One recent study revealed that about 40 percent of babies with eczema suffered from food allergies. Diary is often the culprit. Babies who are breast feeding may also get food allergies from substances in the mother’s milk. It is important for breastfeeding moms to especially careful about their diet.

You should be very careful about using baby lotions on infants with eczema. Some of the lotions have a high water content that that can dry and irriate3 the skin when evaporation takes place. Some of the fragrances and active ingredients in baby lotion can aggravate eczema symptoms.

Creams and ointments containing all natural ingredients should be used instead of baby lotions. Many health food stores have these types of products. Most parents find that natural home remedies are the best way to treat their infant’s eczema symptoms.

If your child suffers from eczema or ant type of dry skin irritation, one of the probable causes is the washing powder you are using to clean their clothes. Choosing the correct washing powder for eczema can greatly reduce your infant’s itching and irritation – this article aims to demosntrate how that can be achieved

Fabric Softener For Baby Clothing

It is indeed daunting to realize that once a baby arrives, not only does your laundry chore doubles, but you need to make arrangements to shield off the tender skin of our baby from harsh clothes. Fabric softeners for baby clothing then becomes a necessity.

It may be reassuring to know it is not always necessary to use a baby detergent for your baby’s clothes. Because a baby detergent does not always get rid of stains and odors on your baby’s clothing as you’d like, it may be better you switch to some other detergent.

Switching on to fabric softener

Before switching to a fabric softener, make sure to test one article of clothing first. Unless your baby has allergies, eczema, atopic dermatitis, or other conditions affecting your baby’s sensitive skin, liquid detergents meant exclusively for babies are your best bet because they work for all types of clothes. But if there seems to be some irritation, you can still try using a fabric softener detergent that does not contain colors or fragrances.

Why Fabric Softeners?

treat your baby's eczema by washing with fabric softener Better than an ordinary baby detergent that only washes because they come with choices to meet the need of your baby’s sensitive skin. Fabric softeners come in two types: sheets and liquids; they also come in scented as well as fragrance-free options.
Fabric softeners give fabrics a softer feel and help reduce static cling (particularly useful for synthetics and permanent press items).
They are designed to make clothes feel softer and smoother, and at the same time reduce wrinkles in clothing and mitigate the need to iron.

How to Use Fabric Softeners

Liquid fabric softeners: Add liquid fabric softener during your washing machine’s final rinse cycle for enhanced softening. Make sure there is water in the machine when you add the softener; however, avoid overfilling the washing machine. Staining may result if a fabric softener is poured directly on the clothes. And most importantly, keep your baby’s fabric softener in an environment where it will not freeze; freezing leads to thickening of the liquid fabric softener.
Fabric softener sheets: While using sheets, it is always advisable to add them just before you start your drier. The drier’s heat activates the softening properties of fabric softener sheets. Staining might result if you allow a fabric sheet to sit in a wet load of clothing.

Remember to avoid washing your little one’s clothes with the rest of the family’s clothes; the harsh detergents are likely to irritate your baby’s skin (most common of them, diaper rash). All said, remember to always read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow them; also look for any special cleaning instructions that may appear on the labels of your baby’s clothing. Following these will ensure soft, fluffy clothes for your baby’s comfort.

The development of eczema can occur in anyone. The disease is largely hereditary but can also appear as toddler eczema, after the first few years of life where previously there were no signs of eczema.

Surveys suggest that one out of ten children can develop eczema, many going on to have the disease permanently where others grow out of it. If you see rashes on your child, consult your doctor and/or dermatologist immediately to confirm the diagnosis.

Babies and children up to 5 years old can experience eczema on the forehead and cheeks, which appear as red, inflamed rashes. This can be extremely uncomfortable for the child and must be treated to avoid further discomfort. There are many creams and ointments available but it is best, where possible, to try for the more natural treatments as opposed to harsh steroid creams.

For older children, eczema often develops on knees, wrists, ankles and elbows which can be aggravated by clothing and other external substances.

You can avoid the flare ups of toddler eczema by following these prevention measures.

1) Use cotton clothing, as this natural material is soft on the skin and does not usually cause or worsen existing eczema, helping the skin breathe and cool down.

2) Use mild soap, preferably of natural ingredients with warm water when bathing. Fragrance free soaps are gentle on skin. Use a cloth to apply the soap and try not to rub the skin roughly.

moisturising cream for eczema in todlers3) Regular moisturizing of the skin helps reduce dryness which increases itchiness. Use creams and ointments that are advised by the doctor to maintain the skin’s moisture and reduce irritability. However some creams which your doctor may prescribe may not always be compatible with your child’s skin. So look out for signs of increased redness and itchiness. It should become apparent if the cream is not working. In this case try something else

4) Encourage your child to avoid scratching and rubbing the affected areas. This will be very difficult for the child but is absolutely necessary.

5) Make sure to keep your child’s nails are trimmed down and clean.

6) Keep your environment clean and dust-free. Also restrict pets on some areas at home.

7) Consider having your child take an allergy test. As this can eliminate substances which cause the eczema.

If your toddler is suffering from eczema, then treat your infants dry skin rashes with special creams and lotions. Learn how to choose the correct moisturisers to reduce the irritation caused to your toddler.

Baby Eczema Cream

A common skin condition is eczema that is described by flaky, scratchy, dehydrated, red epidermis. It frequently begins as a rash on the cheeks however then it can come into view just about anyplace on the child’s body. Often, baby eczema is a nasty rotation: the epidermis is aggravated, it itches, and your youngster rubs or scrapes it, which causes it more itchier and irritated.

Moisturizers have been established to help re-establish the epidermis barrier on condition that a protecting layer on surface of the epidermis to catch water and avoid the penetration of irritants and allergens. An emollient Baby Eczema Cream is superior in trapping the moisture within the epidermis.

There are five randomized controlled trials showing advantages to emollient use in baby atopic eczema. Kantor illustrates a comprehensive improvement from the use of moisturizers. These products include sticky substances like Vaseline, unscented cold cream, 25 percent water in Hydrophilic Petrolatum, aqueous cream, and less sticky like Dermalac, Uremol, and Lachydrin.

The moisturizers should be perfume free and cosmetically acceptable to the patient. With protection, offering a layer of protection on the surface of the epidermis. Be able to re-hydrate by trapping and holding water to return moisture to the epidermis. Last but not lease, it must restore by assisting with restoring the barrier by filling in the holes and gaps in the epidermis barrier.

In a week as much as 400-500 grams of moisturizer is rational in children and proportionately more in adults. Numerous studies have exposed that with amplified miniaturization. The epidermis barrier can be restored, resulting in a considerable reduction in the quantity of current medication used to handle eczema, particularly in mild to moderate eczema.

A steroid cream or ointment occasionally works wonders to help smash an inflexible cycle of baby eczema. A small course of oral steroid medication can on occasion assist in getting eczema under sufficient control that the other techniques you attempt will work more successfully.

toddler eczema cream gentle naturals

When planning the baby eczema cream, it can be prepared at home by using vitamin E capsules, almond oil, and oats. First open the vitamin E capsules and open them. Second take the almond oil and combine it with the powdered vitamin E. Third add some oat powder to make it thick. Last apply this lotion on the affected areas. This will decrease the itchy sensation.

If this method doesn’t work, consult a physician before using other over the counter products.

Seeing your little one tear their skin to shreds is something you want to avoid at all costs. Eczema in children is very difficult as their itch threshold is much lower than that of an adult. Telling your child to stop scratching is as good as useless. The way forward is to get an insight into what is causing the toddler eczema in the first place.

Following are some of the worst offenders for causing toddler eczema.;

Diet

Many children develop an allergy/sensitivity to certain foods at a young age. Common foods which can cause the symptoms of eczema are: dairy, wheat, additives, nuts, fish and eggs. It is highly advisable to ask your doctor to arrange for a allergy skin-test to be performed. This way you can determine what your child is allergic to and eliminate the offending foods from the diet. You can get advice from a dietitian as to alternatives for the missing foods in the diet.

Allergens

As well as foods there are many substances which contain allergens (allergy causing factor) that are commonly found in the household. These substances include, dust, pollen, heavy detergents such as clothes washing powder and animal dander. Much the same way as with food, you can have an allergy tests for these kinds of substances, again allowing you to eliminate from the environment and reduce the chances of toddler eczema.

Clothingclothes to ease eczema irritation in babies

There are certain types of material which cause irritation on the skin, whether it be because of over-heating and sweating or because of an abrasive feature of the material. Such materials include, Wool, polyester linen and leather. Research has shown that the only material which is 100% non-allergenic is cotton. Luckily this is the most common material for clothing so there shouldn’t be a problem for accessing this type of clothing.

There has been much debate about the over-usage of cleaning materials about the house. Many parents believe that the cleaner the environment, the less chance of allergies and skin irritation. While, up to a point this is true, however, there has been studies to show that over-sterilizing can cause the child to have an under-developed immunity to certain allergens. As stated, it is somewhat inconclusive but it is worth bearing in mind not to over sterilize but use cleaning detergents at a normal level of intensity.

Breastfeeding can help your baby avoid contracting eczema. The longer you can breastfeed him the better. This article will talk about 7 breastfeeding principles and how it applies to eczema.

Intestinal protection from allergies

When children are born some assembly is still required, the mothers job of providing nutrients are still not yet complete. A young baby receives from the mother enzymes that prohibits allergens from passing into his bloodstream.

First foods increased chance of eczema

In the place of breast milk, infants are usually fed cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is known to contain more than a dozen allergy producing poisons. In fact cow’s milk is made up of up to 20 different ingredients that can cause eczema and other allergies.

Immune system not developed to work on its own until 3 months

Your babies’ immune system is for the most part unresponsive when he is very young up until the time he 9 months to a year old. That is the reason they are so susceptible to sicknesses unless they are well taken care of. Breast milk is the agent that is designed to bring the immune system up full functioning ability, and without it, the immune system never reaches its full potential.

Mothers milk provides antibodies

Not only does mothers milk prevent allergens from passing into the blood stream, it also contains antibodies that work against organisms that intend to hurt her child.

toddler eczema natural treatment

If you already have eczema, the flare ups are not as bad

When a child is being breastfed but develops eczema anyway breastfeeding is with good reason believed to make the condition less damaging than if he was not breastfed. If you are breastfeeding and your baby still gets eczema, you must then continue to breast feed. It is better to continue than to stop.

Signs of it leaving around age 2

People who continue to breastfeed their baby in the face of eczema are finding that by the time their child is about 2 years old, the eczema has shown signs of being reduced. At this time only the hands, feet and face are being affected. These are the last places that eczema affects a person before it goes away for good.

Breast fed through 12 months have a 46% less chance of getting it

Children who have no eczema and are breastfed through their first year of life are discovered in a study among 17,000 people to have had a 46% less chance of getting eczema than those in the study who were not breastfed.

Baby Eczema Skin Products And Treatments

Babies are able to get infantile eczema, a form of skin inflammation that causes irritation and scratching.

Baby can get it starting when they are first born. It is usually a milder case and can be treated by basic ointments. Usually a baby will outgrow eczema by the time they are two or three. However there are some cases when babies can get a more serious case of baby eczema.

You can start by using good home precautions. When giving your baby a bath, make sure that the water is luke warm or not warmer than 80 degrees. Make sure to only leave the soap and shampoo on for no more than a few minutes because it can start to affect the skin. Once your baby is finished, make sure they are completely dry and then use some baby lotion to keep their skin moist. Remember that baby skin does not absorb as fast as adults.

For the milder cases try using some of these products. Start by using baby shampoos, soaps and cleaners. Use these products in moderation since they can lead to drying out the skin. Same thing with baby lotions, use sparingly. If your baby has a diaper rash you can use a petroleum jelly based product liked Vaseline. Probably the best and most used product is baby oil. It is good to use as baby massage oil.
baby eczema treatment
Places like Gentle Naturals and Zenmed carry baby eczema skin products for purchase. Look for ingredients such as aloe vera to help with irritated skin, petrolatum, dimethicone, calendula, jojoba oil, apricot oil, soybean oil and vitamins A, D, and E. Another remedy is a homemade treatment that is a natural beeswax petroleum jelly. To do this, simply melt beeswax in the microwave and add baby oil, then allow it to cool down. Once it has cooled apply to the affected areas. This will help soothe the irritation and keep natural moisture in the skin.

In more severe cases a doctor will prescribe a steroid cream like hydro cortisone. Usually these topical treatments are not recommended for kids two and younger. Please contact your doctor for questions or concerns.
